Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 4/7/1993
This is the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Wednesday, April 7, 1993, at 12:30 pm, with reports of PACIFIC LOON, SABINE'S GULL, BROWN PELICAN, BREWER'S BLACKBIRD, RUFF, HARLEQUIN, COMMON BLACK-HEADED GULL, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL, RED-NECKED GREBES, and local and seasonal reports of interest. A PACIFIC LOON was at Manasquan Inlet April 3, with Common and Red-throated Loons. A SABINE'S GULL was reported in a flock of Laughing Gulls, on March 30 at 122d St. in Long Beach Township on Long Beach Island, 5 miles south of the causeway on the ocean side at Holly Banks Lane. No report since. Three BROWN PELICANS were reported in Newark Bay on March 29. Six BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS were at South Featherbed Lane in Salem on March 30. RUFF, STILT SANDPIPER and FORSTER'S TERN were reported on the Pedricktown causeway March 30. Ten HARLEQUINS continue at Barnegat Inlet, on the new jetty. BLACK-HEADED GULLS were reported this week at the Salem nuclear plant and on a farm field along Featherbed Lane, Sharptown, also Salem County, both on April 4. LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were seen April 5 in Freehold and April 6 in Thompson Park, Lincroft, in Monmouth Co., in flocks of Ring-bills. GLAUCOUS GULLS, PIPING PLOVER, PURPLE SANDPIPER, GREAT CORMORANT, & MERLIN were at Sandy Hook April 4-5. A good flight of RED-NECKED GREBES hit the Swartswoods on April 3; one was on Little Swartswood, and six were on Big Swartswood. Also there April 3-4, up to 80 Red-breasted Mergansers, one Oldsquaw, numbers of diving ducks, 7 Horned Grebes, and 20 Com. Loons. A SURF SCOTER was at Merrill Creek reservoir April 3, along with REDHEAD, CANVASBACK, and other ducks. Lake Hopatcong April 3 -6 had 3 Oldsquaws, 75 Com. Mergansers, and a Bald Eagle. Lake Musconnetcong had at least 15 waterfowl species April 4; Watchung Lake had Goldeneye, Scaup, and Bufflehead on April 3. Clyde Potts reservoir in Mendham on April 4 had Ring-necked Ducks, Com. Merganser, and Bufflehead, and Common Loon. Woodland Pond, in Mendham on Woodland Ave. had Ring-necks and Hooded Mergansers this week. A Turkey Vulture roost of 15 was reported in Montville, present since late March. Rough-winged and Barn Swallows were in at Frenchtown April 1. A Great Egret was in Great Swamp April 4, and widely reported this week were Tree Swallow, Louisiana Waterthrush, Pine Warbler, and displaying Woodcock.
