Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 4/7/2004
This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday April 8, 2004 with reports of 'BLACK' BRANT, ROSS'S GOOSE, SANDHILL CRANE, RED PHALAROPE, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, seasonal and local reports of interest.

In Salem County Apr 3 single GREATER WHITE-FRONTED and ROSS'S GEESE were found along Compromise Rd along with ICELAND GULL and 3 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS. The EURASIAN WIGEON was still at Mannington Marsh and the SANDHILL CRANE was a fly-by there.

A RED PHALAROPE was off Sandy Hook's north beach Apr 3. An ICELAND GULL was in Horseshoe Cove Apr 4. About 250 raptors passed the Sandy Hook Migration Watch Apr 6-7 including 38 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS. Lingering waterbirds Apr 3 included 50+ HORNED GREBES and 150 LONG-TAILED DUCKS.

The South Amboy mudflats hosted a LITTLE GULL Apr 5 and a 'BLACK' BRANT was in the waterfront park Apr 3. A SANDHILL CRANE was soaring over nearby Conaskonk Point Apr 7. A free "Where to Bird Along Raritan Bay" map is available at SHBO or on our website.

A female COMMON EIDER and 20+ HARLEQUIN DUCKS were found at Barnegat Light State Park Apr 3. Cedar Run Dock Rd had a light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK the same day.

A female REDHEAD was observed at Trenton Marsh Apr 3.

An adult RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was found at Colonial Park in Franklin Township (Somerset Co.) Apr 3. The bird was found off Metler's Rd near the dog leash-free area (DeLorme P. 36, I-12).

Round Valley Reservoir Apr 4 had an adult LITTLE GULL, several LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, 4 LONG-TAILED DUCKS, and RED-BREASTED MERGANSER. A female REDHEAD was there Apr 3.

Kittatinny Valley State Park arrivals included PALM WARBLER and VESPER SPARROW Apr 4.
