of LEAST BITTERN, SOOTY SHEARWATER, WILSONS STORM-PETREL, BROWN
PELICAN, UPLAND SANDPIPER, ALDER FLYCATCHER, CERULEAN WARBLER, VESPER
SPARROW, seasonal & local reports of interest and pelagic trip
LEAST BITTERNS have been calling June 15-19 at Mercer County Park. From
the end of South Post Rd. look in the Phragmites north of the
boathouse on the north shore of the lake (DeLorme P. 42, I8). Another
calling LEAST BITTERN was heard at Black River WMA.
WILSONS STORM-PETREL, SOOTY SHEARWATER, NORTHERN GANNET, and BROWN
PELICAN were observed from Island Beach State Park June 16. June is
typically the best month to see the first two species from land.
A NJ Audubon trip to Lakehurst Naval Air Station June 19 saw 8 UPLAND
SANDPIPERS, COMMON NIGHTHAWK, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, and BLUE
Oberly Rd. in Alpha hosted 3 VESPER SPARROWS and 2 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS June 14;
also there BOBOLINK and HORNED LARK (DeLorme P. 28, N4).
ALDER FLYCATCHERS, WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, and LEAST FLYCATCHERS were found along Wolfpit Rd. in the
Wantage Grasslands off Rte. 651 (Unionville Rd.) June 18 (DeLorme
P. 19, D25).
Two CERULEAN WARBLERS were found off Sawmill Rd. in High Point State
Park June 18. One was at the junction of Sawmill and Ridge Roads,
just off Rte. 23 (DeLorme P. 19, C20).
Miscellaneous reports included many CLIFF SWALLOWS at Bulls Island
State Park and 8 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were at Sandy Hook June 15.
A pelagic trip to NJ/DE waters is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 23, 2002 on
the Morning Star out of Cape May. For more information contact
