Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 6/27/2001
This is the Voice of NJ Audubon for Wed June 27 with reports of Review List WHITE-FACED IBIS, possible HENSLOW'S SPARROW, DICKCISSEL, other grassland birds, seasonal reports and local reports of interest.

An immature WHITE-FACED IBIS was reported this week at Brig June 24 in the NW corner about 150 yards before the "Barn Owl box."

On June 22, at Oberly Road, Alpha, the following birds were seen at 6:00 a.m.: a pair of VESPER SPARROWS; multiple SAVANNAH and GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS; a female HARRIER; a singing DICKCISSEL; HORNED LARKS; and a POSSIBLE HENSLOW'S SPARROW was heard singing.

At Hoffman Park, Pattenburg off Rte. 78 at the Pattenburg exit, numbers of BOBOLINKS are again present and breeding. From the exit on the eastbound (south) side of Rte. 78, take the parallel Baptist Church Road east, follow it around to the right, and Hoffman Park is on your left about a half mile past the right turn.

At the D&R Canal State Park HQ, on Canal Road just south of the Blackwells Mills Road bridge over the Millstone River in Franklin (Somerset Co), the field north of the parking lot has GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, and BLUE GROSBEAK. Farther south along Canal Road, Suydam Road still has MEADOWLARKS, BOBOLINKS, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, BOBWHITE and ORCHARD ORIOLE at the double 90 degree bend at the western end of the road. BOBOLINKS are also in a field on Canal Road between Butler and Suydam roads. Another BLUE GROSBEAK is on Blackwell Mills Road. Reach this area from 206 via 514 east and south on 633 along the river to Blackwell Mill bridge.

CLIFF SWALLOWS are breeding on the tower outlet at Merrill Creek Reservoir. A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER has been present on the north side of Round Valley Reservoir (Lebanon side). A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK is resident at Bamboo Brook in Chester. A CERULEAN WARBLER is resident on Cemetery Road in Jockey Hollow.

A EUROPEAN GOLDFINCH (an escape) showed up at 3 Linden Place in Summit. Periodically these appear at feeders; they are popular cage birds.
