Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 7/18/1990
This is the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Wednesday July 18, 1990, at 3:30 pm with reports of BROWN PELICAN, BALD EAGLE, WILD TURKEY, local and seasonal reports, and an update on the Mongolian Plover sighting on July 13. First that: the MONGOLIAN PLOVER was seen again on July 13, the day it was discovered in the evening on the same flat at the west end of 26th Street in Wildwood. It has not been seen again since July 13. BROWN PELICANS were reported this week in numbers. Eight were at Barnegat Light on July 18; 7 were at the 2d Ave. jetty in Cape May on July 17; other reports this week included 24 pelicans at Holgate and 8 at Brigantine Island. The Miss Barnegat Light out of Barnegat Light has been running whale trips; one such trip on July 16 saw 6 FIN WHALES, 2 sea turtles, 50 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, 10 CORY'S SHEARWATERS and 1 JAEGER sp. about 31 miles offshore. A nearly-adult BALD EAGLE has been reported by several people the past ten days in Great Swamp and in Mendham. An adult WILD TURKEY with seven young was seen on July 13 in Great Swamp. In the Hackensack Meadowlands Environmental Center Area in Lyndhurst this week were numbers of FORSTER'S and LEAST TERNS, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, large numbers of EGRETS, and broods of waterfowl as well as RUDDY DUCK, WOOD DUCK, and PIED-BILLED GREBE. The breeding plumage RED-THROATED LOON continues at Merrill Creek Reservoir along with four or five COMMON LOONS, although the RED-THROATED LOON and COMMON LOONS are usually not seen together.
