Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 7/24/1990
This is the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Tuesday July 24 1990, at 3:30 pm with reports of WHITE-FACED IBIS, BROWN PELICAN, ROSEATE TERN, REEVE, WILSON'S PHALAROPE, other shorebirds, ALDER FLYCATCHER, local and seasonal reports, and announcement of a regular Monday whale watch out of Barnegat Light (following the bird reports). A WHITE-FACED IBIS was found at Brigantine National Wildlife Refuge, still in breeding plumage (mostly). On July 22 it was in the pond at the NW corner of the refuge on the right as you leave the dikes. Also at Brigantine NWR, STILT SANDPIPERS and WESTERN SANDPIPERS this week. BROWN PELICANS are being seen daily on the sandbars inside Barnegat Inlet. Forty were there July 19, and 18 on July 21. Also there, ROSEATE TERN July 18 and ROYAL TERN July 21. Twenty-six BROWN PELICANS were at Sandy Hook July 22 on the bayside opposite the visitors' center. Also there, BLACK SCOTER. In Cape May this week, STILT SANDPIPER in the South Cape May Meadows July 18 & 22, REEVE in the South Cape May Meadows July 21 and WILSON'S PHALAROPE there the same day. At the Hackensack Meadowlands Environmental Center in Lyndhurst on July 23 there were single LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER and STILT SANDPIPER, 450 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 300 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, and 2000 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, in addition to the usual GREBES, waterfowl, TERNS and HERONS. Four WILD TURKEYS were on Fox Chase Rd. in Chester on July 22. ALDER FLYCATCHER was singing on Bartley Rd., Long Valley on July 22. BOBOLINK and SAVANNAH SPARROW were on Orchard Rd. in Hillsborough on July 20. A whale watch boat trip runs every Monday on the Miss Barnegat Light out of Barnegat Light; it leaves 8:30 am, returns 4:00 pm, goes out 31 miles, price $35. For information call Capt.
