This is the Voice of New Jersey Audubon, for Tuesday, July 9, 1991, at 5 PM, with reports of BROWN PELICAN, BLACK TERN, CASPIAN TERN, SOOTY SHEARWATER, RED-THROATED LOON, seasonal reports, and local reports of interest. BROWN PELICANS were reported this week from Barnegat Inlet, from Sandy Hook, and from Cape May at Reed's Beach. A trip on the Miss Barnegat Light on Monday, July 8, produced 4 pelicans at the inlet, 14 Fin Whales at sea, and 1 BLACK TERN, one JAEGER sp., 4 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, and 14 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS. Miss Barnegat goes out on Mondays for whales, 8:30 am to 5 pm. At Sandy Hook 2 RED-THROATED LOONS were seen again this week. A Mississippi Kite was seen on July 9 in Cape May Point State Park, also there, CLIFF SWALLOW. At Lake Assunpink July 6 were CASPIAN TERN, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, and LAUGHING GULL. Following are reports from the Great Swamp area this week. At the "short bilnd", accessible from Long Hill Road, there are family groups of fledged VIRGINIA and SORA RAILS visible from the boardwalk on July 7 and 8. Also on the evening of July 7, a SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, which is rare in the Swamp, and a GREAT HORNED OWL were observed. Also seen this week, from Pleasant Plains Rd. in the Great Swamp, COMMON NIGHTHAWK, HOODED MERGANSER, and five species of swallow.
