This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Wednesday July 9, 2014 with reports of NEOTROPIC CORMORANT, SOOTY TERN, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, SWALLOW-TAILED KITE, ROSEATE TERN, SANDWICH TERN, DICKCISSEL, seasonal and local reports of interest.
NJ's first NEOTROPIC CORMORANT continues along the South Branch of the Raritan River in downtown Clinton, Hunterdon County through Jul 4.
An adult SOOTY TERN was photographed on mudflats at the Sedge Islands, adjacent to Island Beach State Park Jul 3. Also there this week was an unbanded ROSEATE TERN Jul 3 and a SANDWICH TERN Jul 2. A GREAT SHEARWATER was seen from the southern-most parking area at Island Beach Jul 4.
An AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN has been in the Kingsland Impoundment and along the Saw Mill Creek, viewed from the DeKorte Environment Center in Lyndhurst Jul 7-9.
A RED-NECKED GREBE has been seen around the Bayonne Golf Club and Ocean Terminal Jul 3-8.
A COMMON GALLINULE was photographed at Twin Lakes in Kittatinny Valley State Park Jul 4.
A survey of birds along Old Mine Rd in the Delaware Water Gap Jul 4 produced ACADIAN FLYCATCHER, 7 YELLOW-THROATED VIREOS, 30 WOOD THRUSHES, 14 VEERIES, 6 LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSHES, 2 CERULEAN WARBLERS, and 14 HOODED WARBLERS.
A juvenile YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON has been frequenting the Jefferson Rd Pond in Parsippany Twp through Jul 3.
ACADIAN FLYCATCHER and a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT were found along White Bridge Rd in the Great Swamp NWR Jul 3.
A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was noted at Glenhurst Meadows Jul 5.
A DICKCISSEL and several GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS were noted at the Negri-Nepote Grasslands in Franklin Twp, Somerset County Jul 5-7.
Sandy Hook had WILSON'S STORM-PETREL off north beach and 6 LEAST BITTERNS at north pond Jul 2.
A SWALLOW-TAILED KITE was reported over Joe Palaia Park in Ocean Twp, Monmouth County Jul 4.
A BLACK TERN was noted in Monmouth Beach Jul 3.
Sightings from Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR this week included 2 VIRGINIA RAILS and 2 WHIMBRELS Jul 5 and MARBLED GODWIT, STILT SANDPIPER, and BLACK TERN Jul 7.
An immature male SUMMER TANAGER was noted along the red trail at the Michael Huber Preserve in Burlington County Jul 5.
