Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR was the center of attention this week as shorebirding heats up. An AMERICAN BITTERN was noted in the southwest pool at the start of the south dike Jul 27 and a fresh juvenile LARK SPARROW was there Jul 29 along with RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, SORA, and VIRGINIA RAIL. Among the 19 species of shorebirds noted at Brig this week were AMERICAN AVOCET in the northwest pool Jul 29, nine WHIMBRELS, a MARBLED GODWIT in the southwest pool Jul 27, four PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 3 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 6+ WESTERN SANDPIPERS, and 30+ STILT SANDPIPERS Jul 29. Other birds noted at Forsythe this week were 4 LITTLE BLUE HERONS, YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, 3 CASPIAN TERNS, 20 GULL-BILLED TERNS, 2 ROYAL TERNS, 2 SALTMARSH SPARROWS, and 4 BLUE GROSBEAKS.
An early BAIRD?S SANDPIPER was discovered at Whitesbog in Burlington County Jul 31.
A MARBLED GODWIT was found at Sandy Hook?s tidal cut (north end of the fisherman?s trail) Jul 28. Also there this week were 20+ PIPING PLOVERS and 4 RED KNOTS. An early ?fall? songbird flight at the hook Jul 31 included WORM-EATING WARBLER, 8 NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES and 2 LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSHES.
Assunpink WMA had a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO at ?the mulberry tree? overlooking the main lake this week; at the nearby sod farms along Herbert Road an UPLAND SANDPIPER was detected Jul 30.
NORTHERN BOBWHITE and COMMON NIGHTHAWK were found at Collier?s Mills WMA Jul 31.
A ROYAL TERN was found at Mercer County Park Jul 25.
A TRICOLORED HERON was found at the Walker Ave Wetlands in Wayne Jul 26.
