The SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER continues at Whitesbog, Burlington County through Aug 14. The bird has been seen in bog # 4 and 5 on either side of Rte 530 between Rte 70 and the entrance to Whitesbog. It has also been seen on the telephone wires along the entrance road near the general store. Other birds seen in the drawn-down cranberry bogs there this week included 4 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 2 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 15 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 19 GULL-BILLED TERNS, and a BLACK TERN.
Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR hosted 21 species of shorebirds this week including 2 AMERICAN AVOCETS, 10 WHIMBRELS, 12+ WESTERN SANDPIPERS, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 61 STILT SANDPIPERS, and 18 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS Aug 10. An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was seen Aug 11 and a WILSON'S PHALAROPE was there Aug 11-13. Other birds noted at Brig were 5 LITTLE BLUE HERONS, TRICOLORED HERON, a CATTLE EGRET near the Visitor's Center Aug 14, SORA along the Leed's Eco-Trail, 12 GULL-BILLED TERNS, BLACK TERN Aug 13, 2 SALTMARSH SPARROWS, and 5 BLUE GROSBEAKS.
Two COMMON GALLINULES were seen from the Rte 45 bridge at Mannington Marsh in Salem County Aug 10.
OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS were on the move southbound this week, with single birds observed at Palmyra Cove Nature Park Aug 10, Great Swamp NWR and Watchung Reservation Aug 11, and Ringwood State Park Aug 12.
Fifty COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were tallied over a field along Rte 539 in Upper Freehold Twp Aug 10.
A COMMON RAVEN continues to hang around the tern colony by lots C & D at Sandy Hook through Aug 11. Other birds noted at Sandy Hook this week included 2 LEAST BITTERNS at north pond Aug 8, CASPIAN TERN, and WORM-EATING WARBLER.
A birder aboard a fishing boat anchored approximately 10 miles east of the base of Sandy Hook Aug 11 reported 24 GREAT SHEARWATERS, CORY'S SHEARWATER, AUDUBON'S SHEARWATER, and 2 PARASITIC JAEGERS.
A WESTERN KINGBIRD was seen briefly at the Morgan Ave Mudflats (South Amboy) Aug 15.
A juvenile RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was noted at Glenhurst Meadows in Warren Aug 14.
A HUDSONIAN GODWIT was seen near the boat launch at Liberty State Park Aug 13.
Reports from the DeKorte Environment Center/NJ Meadowlands this week included a WILSON'S PHALAROPE and CASPIAN TERN.
A GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was found at the Sasso Tract in Rockaway Twp, Morris County Aug 11.
