This is the Voice of NJ Audubon for Aug 16 with reports of Review List PURPLE GALLINULE and reports and updates on AUDUBON'S SHEARWATER, HENSLOW'S SPARROW, WILSON'S STORM-PETREL, BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER and other shorebirds, and local reports of interest.

The PURPLE GALLINULE found Aug. 12 at the Allendale Celery Farm in Bergen Co. was still there Aug. 15 near the western platform, in the purple loosestrife. Reach it from county routes 502 or 504; reach the area from Garden State Pkway Exit 163 and Rte 17.

The HENSLOW'S SPARROW is still at the Willowwood Arboretum. From 206, take 512 toward Pottersville (west) and follow the Willowwood signs.

Reports from Sandy Hook this week were as follows: on Aug. 12, a PEREGRINE, and out at the ponds at the tip were PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 3 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 3 STILT SANDPIPERS, and elsewhere, MOURNING WARBLER and ROYAL TERN. On Aug. 14, the Hook had YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, N. WATERTHRUSH, YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO and several RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES.

An impromptu pelagic out of Brielle on Bogan's boat Aug 15 turned up about 1,000 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, most of them about 1 mile offshore, and also an AUDUBON'S SHEARWATER at 22 miles out.

Shorebirds in Salem/Cumberland this week included 2 UPLAND SANDPIPERS in a potato field on Garrison Road in Salem Co. From Rte 40, take 77 south to Ruarks Farm market and turn right on Garrison for about 500 yards. At Johnson's Sod farm in Cumberland, there were 2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS, 18 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and assortment of other birds including HORNED LARKS.
