This is the voice of the NJ Audubon Society for Thursday, August 21, 2003 with reports of CORY'S SHEARWATER, AUDUBON'S SHEARWATER, WILSON'S STORM-PETREL, WHITE-FACED STORM-PETREL, AMERICAN BITTERN, AMERICAN SWALLOW-TAILED KITE, AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, WILSON'S PLOVER, UPLAND SANDPIPER, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, MARBLED GODWIT, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, STILT SANDPIPER, WILSON'S PHALAROPE, RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, LONG-TAILED JAEGER, CASPIAN TERN, BLACK TERN, YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, HORNED LARK, AMERICAN PIPIT, and BOBOLINK, a pelagic trip notice and seasonal and local reports of interest.

A WILSON'S PLOVER was reported at the end of Great Bay Boulevard out of Tuckerton August 18 with no details provided. Island Beach SP featured a BLACK TERN August 15, a MARBLED GODWIT, and WESTERN SANDPIPERS and STILT SANDPIPERS August 16 and a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE August 18.

A WILSON'S PHALAROPE discovered August 14 at the Salt Ponds at the north end of Sandy Hook on the Fisherman's Beach was still present August 17. Also present August 15 were two BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, two WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS and a flyover AMERICAN PIPIT. A BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, two BLACK TERNS, a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, and a BOBOLINK were all tallied at Sandy Hook August 17. The Hook was home to LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH August 14 and 17.

An AMERICAN SWALLOW-TAILED KITE was discovered August 16 at the Beanery (Rea Farm) in Cape May and seen at other nearby locations that day only.

A pelagic trip out of Belmar to the Hudson Canyon August 17 produced 12 CORY'S SHEARWATERS, one AUDUBON'S SHEARWATER, 531 WILSON'S STORM PETRELS, one WHITE-FACED STORM PETREL, two RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, and an immature LONG-TAILED JAEGER.

Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR hosted a HUDSONIAN GODWIT August 15 and a flyby AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER August 16 as well as STILT SANDPIPER, CASPIAN TERN and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER. The Johnson Sod Farm near Pole Tavern hosted three UPLAND SANDPIPERS and several HORNED LARKS August 18.

Liberty Sod Farm near Hope was home to four AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS August 18 and along Route 519 just north of Newton 50 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were noted before dusk August 18.

The AMERICAN BITTERN at the Great Swamp NWR was still present from the gazebo on Pleasant Plains Road August 15-17. Scherman-Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuaries in Bernardsville had a small passerine flight August 15-16 including CANADA WARBLERS and CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLERS, plus the resident PILEATED WOODPECKERS.

A pelagic trip aboard the Doris Mae to the Hudson Canyon departing Barnegat Light the evening of August 31 and returning the afternoon of September 1 still has three spaces remaining.
