Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 8/30/2000
This is the Voice of NJ Audubon for Wed Aug 30 with reports of SANDHILL CRANE, SEASONAL SHOREBIRDS, JAEGERS at Brig, and local and seasonal reports of interest.

Most avian action reported this week was on the Salem-Cumberland County line. Two adult SANDHILL CRANES were seen and photographed on the Friesburg Road west of the Bostwick Lake Recreational Area where the towns of Deerfield, Hopewell and Alloway meet.

At the nearby Johnson Sod Farm in Deerfield, one BUFF-BREASTED and up to 6 UPLAND SANDPIPERS and up to 27 GOLDEN PLOVERS were reported during the week. Sightings occurred at or near the following intersections south of the junction of Rtes. 77 and 40: corner of Rte. 77 and Grier; corner of Burlington and Olivet; corner of Harmony and Center. A GOLDEN PLOVERS was also reported on Rte 40, Sharptown near Cowtown.

At Brigantine (Forsythe) NWR Aug 27, a dark morph adult non-breeding PARASITIC JAEGER was reported by a group of observers on the east end of the east pool. On Aug. 28, another group of observers reported a dark juvenile JAEGER thought possibly to be a LONG-TAILED JAEGER. Birds at Brig Aug 23-28 included 10 MARBLED GODWIT Aug 23, numbers of STILT SANDPIPERS, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS and other sandpipers, WILSON'S PHALAROPE, BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS and BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS, and BLACK TERN. Water levels are lower now at the dikes; some birds are hidden in vegetation. The dikes at Brigantine are closed on Thursdays Sept 7 thru Oct 26.

A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was at Palmyra Aug 26. An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was at Merrill Creek Aug 28. There was a good flight of WOOD THRUSH and VEERY at several locations in North Jersey Aug 28-30; and some 75 NIGHTHAWKS were seen over Mendham on Aug 28.
