Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 8/5/1992
This is the substitute Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1992. The Voice of New Jersey Audubon is leading a trip to Maine this week. This week's tape includes reports of MISSISSIPPI KITE, BALD EAGLES, and RAVENS. On July 30 at Mad Horse Creek Wildlife Management Area in Salem County, a MISSISSIPPI KITE was seen, as well as two hatch-year BALD EAGLES. At Mannington Marsh in Salem County the same day two WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were seen, as well as RUDDY DUCKS and CASPIAN TERNS. On Aug. 1 and 2 at Watchung Lake, several LEAST SANDPIPERS were seen on the island. On Aug. 2 at Columbus Sod Farms off Rt. 206 in Burlington County, 5 UPLAND SANDPIPERS were seen. On Aug. 5, on Clinton Rd. in the Newark Watershed, WINTER WRENS were heard singing; BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER was seen, and at Newt (?) Pond, one KENTUCKY WARBLER. In Great Meadows on Aug. 1 two RAVENS were seen, and also on Aug. 1 at the nearby Pequest Hatchery two BLACK VULTURES were seen, and have been regular near the Pequest roost. In Cape May, the VIRGINIA RAILS continue in the South Cape May Meadows; and following this week's cold front things will be starting to happen at Higbee Beach. Call the Cape May hotline for more details. In the Allendale Celery Farm, the two CHILOE WIGEON [presumed exotics] haven't been seen since July 27; however, 3 LEAST BITTERNS and one VIRGINIA RAIL have been seen. In the Hackensack Meadowlands, LEAST BITTERNS have also been around; but the FULVOUS WHISTLING DUCK repoted last week has not been seen again. The Voice of NJ Audubon [(908) 766-2661] is a regular weekly report on birding in New Jersey. The tape is changed regularly on Wednesdays, more often when necessary. [Compiled by R. Kane, NJ Audubon; transcribed for National Birding Hotline Cooperative by L. Larson, llarson@ pucc.princeton.edu.] To report birds to the tape, call (908) 766-5787, or fax (908) 766-7775. For updates between tapes call the NJ Audubon Bird Mailbox, (201) 983-9152. Good birding, and thank you for calling.
