This is the voice of the NJ Audubon Society for Thursday, August 08,
2002 with reports of WHITE-FACED IBIS, BLACK-NECKED STILT, WILSON'S
STORM PETREL, AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER, WILSON'S PHALAROPE, UPLAND
SANDPIPER, REEVE, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER,
STILT SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, CASPIAN TERN, GULL-BILLED TERN,
seasonal and local reports of interest.
One of the Brigantine (Forsythe) NWR WHITE-FACED IBISES was
rediscovered August 6. The refuge is the current hotspot for
shorebird and heron reports with a WILSON'S PHALAROPE noted August 3
and 5, a BLACK-NECKED STILT (flyby) August 4, six LONG-BILLED
DOWITCHERS August 3 and one August 5 along with 2,000 SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHERS, as well as 20 STILT SANDPIPERS, 16 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS,
ten WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, and two AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS all
August 5. Herons at the refuge August 5 included ten LITTLE BLUE
HERONS, four TRICOLORED HERONS, one YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON and a
LEAST BITTERN observed near the refuge exit ponds.
The Johnson Sod Farm near Pole Tavern hosted an AMERICAN GOLDEN
PLOVER August 8 and five UPLAND SANDPIPERS August 2 and two August
6. The Wayne Walker Avenue NJDOT wetlands site (Delorme P26, L2)
Reeve was last reported August 4, while a LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER
August 2 and a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER August 3 stopped at Wreck Pond
in Sea Girt (Delorme P51, C17). Three COMMON MOORHENS were present
at Mannington Marsh August 6.
Five CASPIAN TERNS visited Pea Patch Island in the Delaware River
visible from Fort Mott State Park (Delorme P60, G10) August 4 and
Four GULL-BILLED TERNS were found at Whitesbog August 1. Single
early BONAPARTE'S GULLS were tallied at South Amboy (Morgan) August
6 and Merrill Creek Reservoir August 8. Two COMMON LOONS, a WILSON'S
STORM PETREL, six WHIMBREL, two WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, and an
early MERLIN were observed at Island Beach State Park this week.
