This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday August 8, 2013 with reports of SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER, MANX SHEARWATER, CORY'S SHEARWATER, SWALLOW-TAILED KITE, KING RAIL, AMERICAN AVOCET, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, PINE SISKIN, seasonal/local reports of interest.

A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER discovered along the entrance road to Whitesbog, Burlington County Aug 4 was relocated nearby Aug 5-7. The bird is feeding in cranberry bogs off Rte 530 between Rte 70 and the entrance road to Whitesbog. The bird has been seen on both the north and south sides of Rte 530 about a half mile east of the entrance road to Whitesbog: look for a pink surveyor ribbon marking the general area. Other birds noted at Whitesbog this week included 5 GLOSSY IBIS, 2 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, an early WILSON'S SNIPE, and 8 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS.

Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR had 18 species of shorebirds this week including 2 AMERICAN AVOCETS Aug 2, and 28 WHIMBRELS, MARBLED GODWIT, 6+ WESTERN SANDPIPERS, 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 40 STILT SANDPIPERS, and LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER Aug 3. A CATTLE EGRET was found Aug 4. A KING RAIL was noted near the end of the north dike Aug 3-4. Other birds noted at "Brig" this week were YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, 8 CASPIAN TERNS, 16 GULL-BILLED TERNS, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, 2 SALTMARSH SPARROWS, and 8 BLUE GROSBEAKS.

Floodgates in Gloucester County had 12 CASPIAN TERNS Aug 2.

A MANX SHEARWATER was reported from Barnegat Inlet (State Park) Aug 4.

A HOODED WARBLER was noted at Huber Woods Aug 4.

Sandy Hook had a COMMON RAVEN harassing the tern colony by Lot C and a WORM-EATING WARBLER off raccoon alley Aug 4. A passerine flight Aug 5 included YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, 3 LEAST FLYCATCHERS, a BREWSTER'S WARBLER, 60+ YELLOW WARBLERS, 30 AMERICAN REDSTARTS, OVENBIRD, 3 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS, 4 NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES, and LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH.

A flock of 6 HUDSONIAN GODWITS was noted briefly at Wreck Pond in Spring Lake Aug 4. Also there were 2 RUDDY DUCKS and a WESTERN SANDPIPER. A dawn seawatch from the Salem Ave Beach Pavilion in Spring Lake Aug 5 produced 3 CORY'S SHEARWATERS, 2 GREAT SHEARWATERS, 4 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS, and 13 CLIFF SWALLOWS.

An immature LITTLE BLUE HERON was found at the Negri-Nepote grasslands Aug 4.

A SWALLOW-TAILED KITE was seen over a residence in Chester Twp, Morris County Aug 3. The bird was soaring near the intersection of Pleasant Hill Rd and Reger Road.

A PINE SISKIN was photographed with a flock of AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES at the Fenske Visitor Center at Great Swamp NWR Aug 7.

A COMMON GALLINULE was found at Deerhaven Lake in Morris County Aug 3.
