This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday August 9, 2012 with reports of BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, SANDHILL CRANE, BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, seasonal and local reports of interest, and announcements.

A BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCK continues this week at Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR through Aug 7. The bird is most often seen in the northwest pool with the duck flock at the dog-leg, but is also found in the southeast corner of the southwest pool by the turtle cove tower. The AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN continues in the northwest pool through Aug 7. Other birds noted at "Brig" this week were Cattle Egret Aug 3, 2 LITTLE BLUE HERONS, a juvenile TRICOLORED HERON, 6 YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, 20 WHIMBRELS, 40 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, 12 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 80 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 12 STILT SANDPIPERS, WILSON'S PHALAROPE in the northwest pool Aug 3 & 5, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, 16 GULL-BILLED TERNS, 7 CASPIAN TERNS, and 4 BLACK TERNS.

Also in Atlantic County at North Brigantine Natural Area Aug 3 were 10 BROWN PELICANS, 45 PIPING PLOVERS, 80 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, 570 RED KNOTS, and 6 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS.

Two SANDHILL CRANES were noted at the Rte 45 crossing of Mannington Marsh in Salem County Aug 6.

Island Beach State Park hosted 2 BROWN PELICANS and a BLACK TERN off parking area A16 Aug 6.

Sandy Hook birds noted this week included 3 WHIMBRELS at Spermaceti Cove, YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, and a PROTHONOTARY WARBLER at raccoon alley Aug 3; a waterbird count conducted Aug 5 found 76 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, 920 SANDERLINGS, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, 3 BLACK TERNS at the tidal cut, 460 COMMON TERNS, 43 LEAST TERNS, 48 ROYAL TERNS, and 27 BLACK SKIMMERS.

Two SANDHILL CRANES were photographed along Burlington Path Road in Upper Freehold Twp Aug 5; the birds were in a large field near the Emley's Hill Church.

The Selody Sod Farm in Montgomery Twp, Somerset County hosted an UPLAND SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, and an early BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER Aug 6. The birds were off Skillman Lane opposite Highfield Rd.

A LEAST BITTERN was found on the boardwalk to the Friends Blind at Great Swamp NWR Aug 8.

Spruce Run Reservoir had a LITTLE BLUE HERON, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, 2 CASPIAN TERNS, and a DICKCISSEL Aug 6.

Reports from the NJ Meadowlands this week included 6 YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, 2 CASPIAN TERNS, and 2 COMMON RAVENS on a boat trip Aug 3; over 1,500 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS were noted in the Kingsland impoundment Aug 5 and a BLUE GROSBEAK was on the adjacent landfill the same day. Water levels have been lowered in the impoundment adjacent to the DeKorte Environment Center and birds noted there Aug 8 included LEAST BITTERN, TRICOLORED HERON, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, and 25 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS.

Liberty State Park had a SORA in the marsh adjacent to the headquarters building and a STILT SANDPIPER in Caven Cove Aug 9.
