Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 9/17/2004
This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Friday September 17, 2004 with reports of AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, MARBLED GODWIT, BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, CONNECTICUT WARBLER, seasonal and local reports of interest.

Brigantine NWR (Forsythe) Sep 11 hosted the continuing AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, 2 AMERICAN AVOCETS, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, MARBLED GODWIT, 5-6 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS at the dogleg, and a "Lawrence's" Warbler at the picnic area. The WHITE PELICAN, AVOCET, and BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER were all present Sep 16 as well.

The DeLea Sod Farm in Salem County had 6 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS and 2 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS Sep 14.

Ocean County reports included double-digit numbers of BROWN PELICANS off Great Bay Blvd in Tuckerton and a PARASITIC JAEGER at Island Beach State Park.

Sandy Hook's salt pond at the end of the fisherman's trail had a juvenile BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER Sep 12-17, a high of six BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS Sep 13, and AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER Sep 12-13. Another AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was found at Spermaceti Cove. Passerines noted at the hook this week included RED-HEADED WOODPECKER at the cottonwoods at the end of the fisherman's trail Sep 17, a CONNECTICUT WARBLER in the garden Sep 13, a GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER and PROTHONOTARY WARBLER near the rusty barn the same day, MOURNING WARBLER near the rusty barn Sep 12, PHILADELPHIA VIREO and YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER in Raccoon Alley Sep 12-13, a flyover DICKCISSEL and early PURPLE FINCH Sep 11.

In Sussex County OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS were found at Paulinskill WMA Sep 13 and at the Libertyville Marsh. A juvenile BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was noted at Franklin Pond Sep 14.

Garret Mountain had 11 species of warblers this week including WILSON'S WARBLER and BAY-BREASTED WARBLER; also there were 3 PHILADELPHIA VIREOS.

A CONNECTICUT WARBLER was found at Overpeck Creek Park Sep 16.

Results of the Hudson Canyon pelagic Sep 11-12 were 150+ CORY'S SHEARWATERS, 2 GREATER SHEARWATERS, 3 AUDUBON'S SHEARWATERS, 25 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, 2 RED PHALAROPES, 2 POMARINE JAEGERS, 3 LONG-TAILED JAEGERS, and 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS.
