Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 9/21/2006
This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for Thursday September 21, 2006 with reports of HUDSONIAN GODWIT, WILSON'S PHALAROPE, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, seasonal and local reports of interest, and announcements.

Sightings from Brigantine NWR this week included a male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD Sep 15 along the south dike, 5 MARBLED GODWITS and a WILSON'S PHALAROPE at the northeast corner of the east pool Sep 17, 2 CATTLE EGRETS along the north dike, 6 BLACK TERNS, and a DICKCISSEL along the east dike Sep 18.

At the south end of Brigantine Island 68 WESTERN WILLETS, 3 MARBLED GODWITS, and 1100 BLACK SKIMMERS were recorded Sep 18.

Birds noted along Great Bay Blvd in Tuckerton Sep 18 included 11 BROWN PELICANS and 600+ BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS.

The Johnson Sod Farm along the Cumberland/Salem Co. border hosted 6 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS and 12 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS Sep 17.

Sandy Hook reports this week included an immature RED-HEADED WOODPECKER at the Locust grove, 4 PHILADELPHIA VIREOS, TENNESSEE WARBLER, BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, CANADA WARBLER, and WILSON'S WARBLER among 16 species of wood-warblers noted there over the weekend. At the salt ponds/North Beach area an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER and 3 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were noted Sep 16. A BLACK TERN was at Spermaceti Cove Sep 16. A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was found near K-lot Sep 17. Migrants noted Sep 20-21 included YELLOW- BELLIED SAPSUCKER, CAPE MAY WARBLER and CONNECTICUT WARBLER. A fishing trip to the Hudson Canyon Sep 20 tallied 75 GREATER SHEARWATERS, SOOTY SHEARWATER, 2 AUDUBON'S SHEARWATERS, and 30 WILSON'S STORM-PETRELS.

Birds observed at Big Brook Park in Marlboro Sep 17 included 5 NASHVILLE WARBLERS, 10 PALM WARBLERS, CONNECTICUT WARBLER, and 4 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS.

Assunpink WMA had 6-8 CAPE MAY WARBLERS in the pine grove near the boat launch Sep 16; at least 2 birds were still present there the following day.

Spruce Run Reservoir's boat launch hosted 3 HUDSONIAN GODWITS Sep 19 and a DICKCISSEL was a flyover at Round Valley Reservoir Sep 18.

A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was noted at Warren Green Acres Sep 17, viewed on the west side of the property a quarter mile north of the old dairy barn.

Hyper Humus in Sussex County hosted a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW about 150 yards past the entrance gate Sep 17. Also there were 10 species of warbler and LINCOLN'S SPARROW.

The Raccoon Ridge Hawkwatch recorded 552 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS Sep 16 and a very early GOLDEN EAGLE Sep 17. Also noted there over the week were 6 BALD EAGLES, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, COMMON NIGHTHAWK, 4 COMMON RAVENS, and BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER.

Garret Mountain hosted 15 species of warbler including 3 BAY-BREASTED WARBLERS and a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER Sep 20.

Reports from the Allendale Celery Farm this week were of 150+ BROAD- WINGED HAWKS, 7+ COMMON NIGHTHAWKS, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, 14 species of warbler including a CONNECTICUT WARBLER, and LINCOLN'S SPARROW.

North Hudson Park in North Bergen had 2 HOODED WARBLERS Sep 17. At Liberty State Park that day were SWAINSON'S THRUSH and 10 species of warbler including a CONNECTICUT WARBLER.

Single STILT SANDPIPER and PECTORAL SANDPIPER, and an AMERICAN PIPIT, were noted at the Hackensack Meadowlands Sep 16.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

As of Sep 18 the restrooms at Brigantine NWR were closed for repairs. If you visit during the week, you can try and use the restrooms at the refuge headquarters across the parking lot.
