Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 9/22/2005
This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for Thursday September 22, 2005 with reports of MAGNIFICENT FRIGATEBIRD, AMERICAN AVOCET, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, CONNECTICUT WARBLER, LARK SPARROW, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, seasonal and local reports of interest.

A male MAGNIFICENT FRIGATEBIRD was spotted over High Bar Harbor just west of Barnegat Light Sep 21 at 6:30 pm.

Brigantine NWR reports this weekend included the AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, 5 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, 2 AMERICAN AVOCETS in the northwest pool, CATTLE EGRET, and the female YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD along the north dike.

The Johnson Sod Farm in Deerfield Twp continues to attract BUFF- BREASTED SANDPIPERS with an incredible tally of 51 recorded Sep 16. Also there were 10 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, UPLAND SANDPIPER, and a LARK SPARROW the same day. Eighteen BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were noted Sep 18. Also in Salem County Sep 18 were 175 CATTLE EGRETS along Featherbed Lane, 20 COMMON MOORHENS at Mannington Marsh, and 5 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS at the DeLea Sod Farm.

Palmyra had 17 species of warbler Sep 21 including 2 CAPE MAY WARBLERS, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, MOURNING WARBLER, and CONNECTICUT WARBLER; also there were PHILADELPHIA VIREO and BLUE-HEADED VIREO.

Sandy Hook reports Sep 17-19 included an AMERICAN BITTERN near north pond, a juvenile YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON at Spermaceti Cove (through Sep 21), AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER at North Beach, PHILADELPHIA VIREO at the garden, YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER at the Rusty Barn, 14 species of warbler including BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, and 2 YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS, and a flyover DICKCISSEL at North Pond. A MOURNING WARBLER was found along Raccoon Alley Sep 22 and a SUMMER TANAGER was in the Locust Grove the same day. A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT and a LARK SPARROW were noted near the Battery Lewis overlook in the Rocky Point section of Hartshorne Woods Sep 18.

Thompson Park in Lincroft hosted 3 CONNECTICUT WARBLERS Sep 18. The birds were found along the hedgerow facing south before the lake.

Three HUDSONIAN GODWITS were discovered in the Hackensack Meadowlands Sep 21 along the Transco trail near the DeKorte Center.

North Hudson Park in North Bergen hosted 3 GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSHES, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, BLACKPOLL and BLACK- THROATED BLUE WARBLERS Sep 21.

Liberty State Park highlights this week included 12 YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS and a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT.

The Allendale Celery Farm Sep 21 continues to hold a COMMON MOORHEN. Also there that day were 2 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS and a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT.

It seems to be an excellent fall for PHILADELPHIA VIREOS, with multiple birds reported at Garret Mtn, Trout Brook WMA, Allaire State Park, and Cedar Run this week.
