Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 9/30/2004
This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for Thursday September 30, 2004 with reports of SABINE'S GULL, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, CONNECTICUT WARBLER, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, seasonal and local reports of interest.

A SABINE'S GULL was found in Cape May this week-- call the CMBO Hotline for details.

Brigantine NWR continues to host the AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, this week in the east pool; 2 AMERICAN AVOCETS Sep 26, and a female YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD among a flock of Red-winged Blackbirds at the northeast corner of the east pool Sep 27.

Great Bay Blvd in Tuckerton Sep 26 hosted 20 BROWN PELICANS, 23 SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS, and 2 NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS.

Island Beach State Park reports Sep 26 included 5 BROWN PELICANS, YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON, a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER across from the visitor's center, and LINCOLN'S SPARROW.

Sandy Hook sightings Sep 26 included PHILADELPHIA VIREO, CONNECTICUT WARBLER and CLAY-COLORED SPARROW in the garden, MOURNING WARBLER in the locust grove, and DICKCISSEL. A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was found in the cottonwoods near the salt pond the same day. Five BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS and four WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were noted at the salt ponds Sep 25. A total of 20 species of warblers were noted Sep 26. A fly-over DICKCISSEL was noted at SHBO Sep 30.

Thompson Park in Lincroft had ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, CONNECTICUT WARBLER, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, and DICKCISSEL Sep 25. Most of the birds can be found in the thickets and hedgerows in the last quarter mile before the lake.

A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was noted at Assunpink WMA Sep 26.

Up to 3 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS have been seen this week in the Great Swamp NWR around the heron rookery at the end of Pleasant Plains Road. A calling VIRGINIA RAIL was noted there Sep 26.

Wallkill River NWR's Liberty Loop impoundments had AMERICAN BITTERN, SORA, 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, 8 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 61 WILSON'S SNIPE, and 2 AMERICAN PIPITS this week. A HUDSONIAN GODWIT was reported Sep 27.

Overpeck Creek in Bergen County had 9 species of warbler including CONNECTICUT WARBLER and 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS Sep 26.

The Allendale Celery Farm had COMMON NIGHTHAWK, MOURNING WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER and LINCOLN'S SPARROW Sep 30.
