Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 9/4/2001
This is the Voice of NJ Audubon for Tue Sept 4 with reports of Review List PACIFIC GOLDEN PLOVER, CHIHUAHUAN RAVEN (of unknown origin), AVOCET and seasonal shorebird reports, and local reports of interest.

On Sept 4, a PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER was reported with 11 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS on the Johnson sod farm on Olivet Road east of Route 77 near the Cumberland-Salem line. This would be a first for NJ. Also there this week BUFF-BREASTED and PECTORAL SANDPIPERS. From the junction of Routes 77 & 40 go south on 77 to Olivet Rd.

At Brig Sept 3, an AVOCET was in the east pool; also there, lots of BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER and YELLOWLEGS, a BLACK TERN and 6 CASPIANS.

A CHIHUAHUAN RAVEN was reported on Sept 1 on Herbertville Road in Brick, Ocean County near the reservoir across from the Garden State Parkway--no further details.

At Sandy Hook Sept 4, the salt ponds at the tip had 2 BAIRD'S, 2 WHITE-RUMPS, and 2 WESTERN SANDPIPERS and 2 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER.

At Island Beach Sept 1, two MARBLED GODWITS were near the Spizzle Creek blind-Sedge Island area.

At the Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area, there were numerous VIREOS, YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, and YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO.

At Columbia Lake and Merrill Creek, WARBLING VIREOS were numerous; also at Merrill, there was a good flight of warblers Sept 2, including BLACKBURNIAN, MAGNOLIA, BLACK-THROATED BLUE, BLACK-THROATED GREEN and also, in both places, numerous RED-EYED VIREOS, EMPIDS and WOOD PEWEES. An imm. BALD EAGLE and several OSPREYS were also on the reservoir, and an odd occurrence: a flock of 14 LAUGHING GULLS.

A BALD EAGLE was in Great Swamp Sept 1.

Two CASPIAN TERNS continue at the Environmental Center in Lyndhurst; there were few shorebirds and unusually high water. High water also has limited shorebirds at Spruce Run.

RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES were reported from a half dozen locations.
