Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 9/4/2014
This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday September 4, 2014 with reports of AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, KING RAIL, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, UPLAND SANDPIPER, WESTERN KINGBIRD, seasonal and local reports of interest.

The KING RAIL continues this week at the walkway along the Bayonne Golf Club. Also in that area and adjacent Ocean Terminal were the summering RED-NECKED GREBE, SORA, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, MARBLED GODWIT, WESTERN SANDPIPER, and SEASIDE SPARROW. Also in Hudson County was an UPLAND SANDPIPER at Liberty State Park Aug 27 and a MOURNING WARBLER at Hudson County Park Sep 4.

The AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN continues this week at the DeKorte Environment Center in Lyndhurst. The AMERICAN AVOCET remains through Aug 31 at Harrier Meadow (restricted access).

A LEAST BITTERN was noted at the Vernon Crossing Marshes Aug 30. Also in Sussex County were OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS along Rt. 615 in the Delaware Water Gap NRA and at Allamuchy State Park.

The Great Piece Meadows Sod Farm in Warren County hosted 3 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS Sep 1-2 and a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER Aug 31-Sep 1.

Spruce Run Reservoir had a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER and BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER this week, seen at the mouth of Mulhockaway Creek.

An AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was found at Skillman Park Aug 31 and at nearby Selody Sod Farm in Montgomery a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was noted Sep 1.

Eleven AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS were found in the sod fields near the corner of Gordon Rd and Rt. 539 in Mercer County Aug 31; also there this week were 2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS. At nearby sod fields in Monmouth County around Herbert Road and Rt. 539/Sharon Station Rd AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS and a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER were noted.

Sandy Hook sightings included 6 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, 22 PIPING PLOVERS, and 2 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS at the tidal cut/false hook area Sep 1; SORA, a WESTERN KINGBIRD Aug 29 along the fisherman's trail, 2 YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS, WORM-EATING WARBLER, and MOURNING WARBLER.

Wreck Pond hosted 6 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS and 4 HUDSONIAN GODWITS Sep 1.

In Ocean County, several MARBLED GODWITS were found this week at the Sedge Islands accessed from Island Beach State Park. At Barnegat Inlet 40 BROWN PELICANS and 3 BLACK TERNS were noted. A BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER flew into the Ocean County zone of Whitesbog

Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR birds this week included 7 HUDSONIAN GODWITS Aug 31 and 2 TRICOLORED HERONS, 2 YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, MARBLED GODWIT, BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, and 2 BLACK TERNS Aug 30.

Franklin Parker Preserve in Chatsworth Aug 31 had BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 400 PURPLE MARTINS, 5 BOBOLINKS, and 2 BLUE GROSBEAKS.

Floodgates in Gloucester County had BLACK TERN and LEAST TERN Sep 1.

The Johnson Sod Farm on the Cumberland/Salem County border had AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, and 7 UPLAND SANDPIPERS this week, mostly seen along Grier's Lane. Another BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER was seen at the East Coast Sod Farm Sep 1; The Coombs Sod Farm near Elmer had 3 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, 2 UPLAND SANDPIPERS, and BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER this week, and Franzen Rd in Monroeville had an excellent count of 40 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS Sep 1.
