Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 9/5/2000
This is the Voice of NJ Audubon for Sep 5, with reports of Review List BRIDLED TERN, and other reports of pelagics, seasonal shorebirds, SANDHILL CRANES, a COMMON CRANE with SANDHILLS, WHITE PELICAN, and local reports.

Highlights of the FONT Pelagic Trip out of Brielle to Hudson Canyon Sep 2 were: 5 BRIDLED TERNS, 8 AUDUBON'S SHEARWATERS, 13 POMARINE JAEGERS and the other usual pelagic suspects and passerine hitchhikers. The pelagic out of Cape May Sep 3 had an even more wondrously unprecedented 23 BRIDLED TERNS! Not even in a hurricane! A WHITE PELICAN was reported Aug. 29 at Stone Harbor--no report since.

The Johnson Sod Farm area of Cumberland and adjacent Salem counties continues to be a hotspot. UPLAND SANDPIPERS, GOLDEN PLOVER and BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER were found Aug 30-31 at Grier and 77; at Olivett and Burlington; and SANDHILL CRANES on Harmony Road. The CRANES were not reported this week on Friesburg Road (those are video-taped adults), but the several reports of SANDHILLS on Harmony Road included sometimes 2 CRANES (no ages given) and 3 cranes (one adult and one juv SANDHILL and one COMMON CRANE). The COMMON is possibly the same individual known to have been in the area previously. [An escaped Common Crane, present in Salem Co. a few years ago, walked with a limp. Please check for this if you see the bird. - tr.]

Herbert Road off Rte 539 in Hightstown on the way into Assunpink had 7 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS Aug. 31. On Sep 4, there were 15 BUFF-BREASTS at Herbert Road, along with 12 juvenile HORNED LARKS and a few GOLDEN PLOVER.

Brig had WILSON'S PHALAROPES and RED-NECKED PHALAROPES Aug 30 along with BLACK TERN and other seasonal shorebirds. The dikes held 20+ shorebirds Sep 3, among them the two PHALAROPES, STILT SANDPIPERS and BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS and LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER. On Sep 4, there were 5 WILSON'S PHALAROPES present and also BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER.
