NJA Eco-Travel—Louisiana Cajun Country
Southwestern Louisiana: Cheniers, Cypress Swamps, and Cameron Parish Coastal Louisiana offers marvelous spring birding without the crowds of the nearby Upper Texas Coast. Our trip will sample some of the many interesting habitats found in this region. Exploring Atlantic County
Join CMBO Naturalists Chris Marks and Shaun Bamford to explore the birding hotspots in Atlantic County. This trip will focus on Estelle Manor Park, one of the many excellent spring birding spots in Atlantic County. It is bordered by the Great Egg Harbor River / South River to the east and by Route 50 to the west. In all, it is about 1700 acres and includes a 2-mile paved loop with viewpoints of the South River as well as several hiking paths throughout the park. Many different habitats comprise the park, which creates a diverse selection of plant and wildlife. Some sightings may include bald eagles, Eastern Bluebirds, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Louisiana Waterthrush, Magnolia Warbler, Prothonotary Warbler, Hooded Warbler and much more; if time allows, other nearby spots may be visited. Because of the inherent dynamic nature of birding, we do not pre-set an exact itinerary but will visit areas that regularly hold good numbers of birds. Final location decisions will be made by the leader based on local knowledge and conditions at the time. We may walk up to 1.5 miles, over generally level, sometimes muddy or sandy terrain. NEW 2024! The Ocean City Welcome Center has become a must-see breeding bird destination. Join our Volunteer Naturalists for great views of nesting wading birds, including Great Blue and Little Blue herons, Yellow-crowned and Black-crowned night-herons, Great and Snowy egrets, Glossy and White ibis - all building and sitting on nests. The raised parking lot of the Welcome Center provides very close views of the birds, so be sure to bring your camera to try to capture some amazing photos! The group will spend time viewing these birds from the bridge overlook, as well as taking a short walk underneath the bridge to view the birds at eye level. Our Naturalists will provide scopes for participants, but bringing your own scope is encouraged. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. Notes: The Welcome Center exit takes you into Ocean City. Once in town you can go around a block to get back onto the outbound road. Gnats may be a problem. NEW 2024! The Ocean City Welcome Center has become a must-see breeding bird destination. Join our Volunteer Naturalists for great views of nesting wading birds, including Great Blue and Little Blue herons, Yellow-crowned and Black-crowned night-herons, Great and Snowy egrets, Glossy and White ibis - all building and sitting on nests. The raised parking lot of the Welcome Center provides very close views of the birds, so be sure to bring your camera to try to capture some amazing photos! The group will spend time viewing these birds from the bridge overlook, as well as taking a short walk underneath the bridge to view the birds at eye level. Our Naturalists will provide scopes for participants, but bringing your own scope is encouraged. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. You may hear birds singing at your feeder or backyard, now it’s time to listen to music inspired by those beautiful sound. Join us at the state-of-the-art Schmitdtchen Theatre at Lower Cape May Regional High School to see the musical presentation: What We Owe to Birds. This performance is a collaborative music and multimedia project meditating on bird conservation produced by five composers of the Princeton New Jersey-based Consonance Collective (CNSNC). Exploring topics ranging from the evolution of flight, flock migration behavior, birds of urban landscapes, birds endangered by forest fires, and shorebirds conservation, this project is brought to life by the BlackBox Ensemble, an NYC-based contemporary music ensemble dedicated to creating adventurous and engaging performances of the music of our time. What We Owe To Birds is CNSNC’s third entry in a series of collaborations with scientific partners, following on the heels of projects with the Space Telescope Science Institute and the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center. Spring Migration Special
Join David La Puma to bird for everything on this three-day break, all things that make a spring week in Cape May so special! Celebrate spring with migrating songbirds and shorebirds teeming on the mudflats - Hooded and Yellow-throated Warblers sing in the shadows of Belleplain State Forest, while Summer Tanagers “piki-tuck” overhead; Red Knots and Sanderlings feed in mosaics of rust and silver along the Delaware Bayshore; assorted egrets and herons dot the saltmarsh and there’s always the chance of a lively fall of birds somewhere around Cape May Point. This workshop is all about the diversity of spring migration and focuses not just on identifying birds, but also on learning about their lives. SPOTTING SCOPES ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR THIS TRIP Because of the inherent dynamic nature of birding, we do not pre-set an exact itinerary but will visit those parts of Cape May County that regularly hold good numbers of birds. Join our Volunteer Naturalists for great views of nesting wading birds, including Great Blue and Little Blue herons, Yellow-crowned and Black-crowned night-herons, Great and Snowy egrets, Glossy and White ibis - all building and sitting on nests. The raised parking lot of the Welcome Center provides very close views of the birds, so be sure to bring your camera to try to capture some amazing photos! The group will spend time viewing these birds from the bridge overlook, as well as taking a short walk underneath the bridge to view the birds at eye level. We explore the coastal saltmarsh of Cape May from Cape Island Creek to the Wildwoods and view the natural wonders of historic Cape May Harbor. The Osprey is a 37' pontoon boat that has a comfortable enclosed cabin with large viewing windows, a front deck with a railing, and a restroom on board. Non-motorized wheelchair accessible. NEW 2024! The Ocean City Welcome Center has become a must-see breeding bird destination. Join our Volunteer Naturalists for great views of nesting wading birds, including Great Blue and Little Blue herons, Yellow-crowned and Black-crowned night-herons, Great and Snowy egrets, Glossy and White ibis - all building and sitting on nests. The raised parking lot of the Welcome Center provides very close views of the birds, so be sure to bring your camera to try to capture some amazing photos! The group will spend time viewing these birds from the bridge overlook, as well as taking a short walk underneath the bridge to view the birds at eye level. Our Naturalists will provide scopes for participants, but bringing your own scope is encouraged. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED. DISTANCE COVERED: Very short distance from parked car to walkway with railing overlooking rookery, followed by a short walk underneath the bridge. ACCESSIBILITY: You arrive at a paved parking lot on the upper viewing level. A lower level is available for viewing at ground level via stairs and ramp. Restrooms inside Welcome Center. Notes: The Welcome Center exit takes you into Ocean City. Once in town you can go around a block to get back onto the outbound road. Gnats may be a problem.
