Highlights
Treasure Lake in Cliffwood, off Rt. 35, is one of the few
freshwater ponds close to the shore of Raritan Bay. This small
lake is surrounded by a marsh with a border of woods.
In winter, check the pond for waterfowl including Pied-billed
Grebe, Wood Duck, Gadwall, and Hooded Merganser. The bay here
can be good for Common and Red-throated Loons, Horned Grebe, and
waterfowl. During migration, wading birds and passerines can be
found around the lake.
NOTE: Pirate's Cove Park and the mouth of Whale Creek are a
fraction of a mile down the road, and can easily be combined
with a visit to Treasure Lake.
Directions
- Traveling north on Rt. 35 from Exit 117 of the Garden
State Parkway, turn right at the Cliffwood Ave. traffic
signal.
- Travel about 0.5 miles and make a left onto West
Concourse.
- In about 0.1 mile, stay straight as West Concourse veers
to the right.
- You are now on Greenwood. Take Greenwood to its end
(about 0.25 miles).
- Turn right on Lakeshore Dr.
- After one block, on the right you will see a sign with a
picture of binoculars. This is the trail to Treasure Lake. The
road makes a left turn here (becoming Ocean Ave.). There is
parking in the playground/park that is another 0.1 mile
further, on the left.
